Cricket!

So, I was sitting on the front door step earlier (it was sunny and I sit there and play random stuff through YouTube and then sing along ::grin::) and saw what I thought was a leaf blowing across the path. And then it stopped and lifted a leg up. Turns out it was a cricket. Now, the thing is, I've never actually seen a cricket before (much to the amusement of everyone else, who were all "Really?!"), so I did what any normal person would do when confronted by a strange and wondrous creature... I grabbed the camera.

Only, I figured that was kind of a distance shot, and I'm still in love with the close-up function, so I got a little closer.

Everyone then mocked me for getting snap-happy. Well, paf I say... 74 pictures of a cricket is totally reasonable ::grin::

ETA: After a couple of comments and looking online, she's more likely a grasshopper than a cricket, as the nearest I could find was the long-winged conehead grasshopper :D

Dude that's awesome! I've never seen one either! Those shots are win! Yet another creature desperate to be photographed!

this is about 75% the comment I was going to make. I've never seen one either and that's awesome! LOOK AT IT'S EYES!!!

I'm rather pleased as to how some of these turned out :D

::grin:: I was all "Dude!"

(And she's actually probably a grasshopper ;D)

That thing is huge!

[identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
She was quite considerable in size ::grin::

COOL. I love the profile shots, and the color is very snappy. Awesome!

I love how some of these turned out. Made up for the green splodge ones I also took ::grin::

Maybe it's one of those American English vs. British English things, but...

In the US, that's called a grasshopper. Crickets are similar but they're smaller and brown. Grasshoppers are much cooler.

Looking online, you're probably right :D You can get green crickets around here, but the nearest I've found to this is a long-winged conehead grasshopper. I think we tend to use the two terms interchangeably, which probably annoys any cricket/grasshopper experts ::grin::

Cool pics! Cricket or grasshopper-looks like an alien to me!

::grin:: I love the close-up shots. Some of them came out brilliantly :D And yes, she does look rather alien-like, doesn't she :D

You took only 74 pictures? ;-)

Very cool! I'd say it's a grasshopper, but then I've never seen a cricket, who knows what they look like ;-).

::g:: I'd never seen either, but it seems like my cricket/grasshopper identifying skills are pretty rubbish ;D

I thought 74 pictures was very reserved ::grin::

Brilliant, fantastic, gorgeous photos!

And 74 pictures sounds like a perfectly reasonable number to me ::nods vigorously::

[identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed, 74 was positively refrained ;D

That is so very cool! What a huge monster! And amazing it kept sitting there while you took the 74 snaps. *g*

And again I am very awed by the quality of your zoom function and the sharpness of the shots.

[identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
::grin:: My zoom function is actually pretty shit, but sometimes I luck out with the close-up function. Also, out of the 74 there were a few green splodge ones ;D
