Okay, this is a story that starts last month, and you may not be interested, but I'm feeling self-righteous about the entire incident so I'm inflicting it on you {g}

So, I'm in the local Safeway about 4 weeks ago and notice they've opened a salad bar. So I go over to check it out and see what they've got in the way of bizarre pasta type things and notice they've got prawn salad. But they've obviously got a special type of prawn salad, a magical type of prawn salad, because this prawn salad is labeled as 'suitable for vegetarians'.

When I went over to the Deli to point out that vegetarians don't actually eat prawns I was looked at by this woman and told "Yes, they do." I was told that they'd had this complaint before and had looked it up. When I queried further, she told me "Well, you can do what you like, but vegetarians eat fish."

Normally, I wouldn't have been so narked only she spoke to me like I was 5 years old, like I was obviously stupid for not knowing that vegetarians eat fish. (And of course, after only 19 years of being a vegetarian I obviously have no idea of what I can and can't eat.) Now this pissed me off. And PissedOff!Claire is pretty much the same as OnARighteousCrusade!Claire. So, home I come and straight onto the Vegetarian Society webpage where I find at least two pages stating that vegetarians don't eat fish.

So, I write a letter to Safeway. And I comment about the rude staff who don't know what they're doing (but in rather nicer terms than that {g}), and quoting the VegSoc and mentioning Trading Standards (because the guy I spoke to at VegSoc when I rang to ask if I could quote their webpage advised me that I should go to Trading Standards if I didn't get a satisfactory reply), and asking if vegetarians can actually trust Safeway to sell them foods they can eat. Now, today was the first time I've been back in the store since I wrote the letter, and lo and behold, no 'suitable for vegetarians' on the prawn salad.

Vindictive? Smug? Me? When people talk to me like I'm an idiot, you betcha. After all, the last time I looked, prawns hadn't achieved the same status as a potato... which is more than can be said for certain members of my family {eg}
