So, I uploaded the Supernatural stuff to AO3. And, yeah, I threw it all up there over the course of a couple of days instead of drawing it out over weeks, which, admittedly, probably pissed people off for flooding but, hey, it's done now. And then I got this (a direct c&p):

Wow. You have alot of posts up. Of pretty pedestrian smut. You must think a lot of yourself, to, put up this much material. I mean, I am not saying its bad, simply that it might be better to post fewer pieces at a time. I for one am always tempted to be put off by folks who post more than three stories at once--only because its rare that someone who posts in volume is producing worhty work. It just makes it look like one has nothing better to do. For some of us, writing is an expression of something numinous--which it can't be, if you write in volume. Just sayin', and just my opinion.

Well, personally, I think I'm fucking awesome but your mileage may vary ::grin::

What amuses me the most is that this was post on a story that was added into the 2009 MMoM collection. Which would mean it was written three years ago. I have the impression this person thinks I wrote everything I just uploaded in, like, a couple of weeks which, lol, no.

Wow. So they don't know that a lot of people repost stuff to AO3? I've done that a few times, posting a lot in a day, and I've seen other people do it. I thought that was kind of understood. Then the snobby ass 'us writers' stuff. Double wow.

I think you're awesome too. I'm tempted to explain how some writers take stuff from here (place A) and repost it here (A03) in very simplistic terms but it's not my pretentious commenter.

I was pretty sure other people had done it, as well (the posting a lot of older stuff at once thing), which is why I thought I'd get it all done and over with. (Although, admittedly, that was possibly because I was sure I'd end up losing track of what was posted if I did it over the course of a month. And also impulse control issues. Once I commit, I commit, damn it ::grin::)

I did make a snarky comment back, including ending it with "Just sayin', and just my opinion" because I could ::grin::

*snorfl* Okay, that one just cracks me up. I don't think they even read any of it, just noticed the number of post you wrote in a matter of I suspect they think days.

And now I need to go find out if numinous is even a word.

Okay, Wikipedia enlightened me. Now I just wonder how they find the time to trawl through the archive if writing is such a divine experience to them.

I was most displeased to find the American triple play is going to be region specific, since it was going to be out soonest. I so want to watch this on my parents' bluray!

Hee, good for you.

And yeah, I lost my spot while transferring some stories and now I have to go to A03 then back to my lj and then to my files while I try and see what I put on there versus what else needs to go up.

I wish I had put it all up at once. Maybe one I do the fandoms with just a few stories.

... /FACEPALM.

A large part of the posters on AO3 are, well, archiving, which of course means posting en-masse with several posts from many days, weeks, year previous. It is a way to have all of one's works in one place and well-organized, and I had thought that everyone realized this. Apparently not.

You are a very good writer, and you certainly take your time. I don't think they paid any attention. Looks as if they just saw a bunch of posts with your name on it and assumed the worst. It doesn't say much good about them that they decided to make a case against you without understanding the content they had issue with. Poor politics, is what it is. You are obviously not much bothered, but I know that in your shoes I would be slightly bothered anyway, as is the nature of humans (or perhaps just of the anxious. I can not tell any more), and so here I am to tell you, with all due respect to your criticizer (that is, none), that they are full of bullshit.

Don't worry about idiots, dahling. Fandom is full of morons~

Knowing you as I do, I strongly suspect that you are not a bit arsed about anyone else's (rather rude and condescending) opinion, but there is the option to backdate/maintain the original posting date if you import from another site like livejournal. Which would mean that it wouldn't all show up at once, but would be spread out across the timeline of the archive as though you had posted contemporaneously (see, I know big words, too!).

I always import from livejournal or dreamwidth, because I am lazy and it is easy. Also, it keeps my tags and links them back to the tags on my dreamwidth (it's usually dreamwidth, because LJ can be flakey).

Almost everyone I've heard mentioning AO3 has talked about putting all their stuff up in chunks. You pretty much have to, or you'd be doing it forever. how could anyone think you'd written everything in a week? And why do they care? Are the the 'checking-everyone's-upload-quantity police?' Also, I thought numinous meant 'otherworldly or supernatural' which is...an odd way to describe writing....

I think you're awesome too, I'd be pretty chuffed if I came across a big basketful of your stuff I'd never read.

Even if your work was crap, that would still be a rude and unnecessary thing to say. And since when did fanwriting have to be a "numinous" experience for anyone to be allowed to participate?

I'm somewhat baffled that anybody is unaware of the common practice of uploading previously written work to AO3. That aside, I do love the way the attempt to sound like a Serious Writer(TM) is completely undone by the actual comment. 'I... am always tempted to be put off'... In what language does that make any sense? I wouldn't normally point and laugh in case English might not be this person's first language but, in this context, it's pretty damn hilarious.

And yup, you're awesome. :)

wow, what a condescending cow/bastard/git! I don't get that - I've sat and uploaded a ton of stuff in one afternoon - AO3 is late to the party and loads of people upload archives!

Although, since most of the fic was Dean/Castiel, I guess 'supernatural' would actually be the perfect word for it ::grin::

And, yeah, most of the people I've seen talking about uploading their older stuff has mentioned doing it in large chunks and getting it out of the way, which is why I really didn't think twice about doing it that way.

That's seriously clueless of them. I uploaded over 500 pieces there over a few weeks because when I get obsessed with a project, I get OBSESSED.

If she'd wandered across it, she must have thought I had a time machine or didn't require sleep to have written that much so fast, lol.

Numinous? OMG. No words.

My question would be, does anybody NOT post their stuff to AO3 in one go? Because I don't know anyone who hasn't done it that way initially.

Also. pedestrian smut makes me think of Castiel throwing himself at random people walking down the street and assaulting them in the hopes that they're dean.

Also also? That person is a fucking ass.

Oh...dear.

What an idiot. Not you! (never!). The idiot (how can they not realise that you were archiving a bunch of stories written over a long period of time at once?) who sent you that rather rude, ill-spelt and ungrammatical message. Judging by the calibre of the message their stories aren't going to be worth reading, whereas yours are actually, you know, good!

I agree that all this proves is that the person obviously doesn't have the brain power to realise that you might have put everything up in a short time but perhaps wrote it over the course of a few months...

Still, at least they took the time out of their obviously very busy day to flame you! :D
