Rambling January Day 3

Day 3 sees us with ruric's topic of "Talk to me about Peter Hale: mad, bad and dangerous to know or just misunderstood woobie? Or, indeed, anything you'd like to say about Peter and/or Ian Bohen!"

Oh, my thoughts on Peter Hale...

Okay, so my attraction to Peter Hale as a character comes from two places.

Firstly, I've always preferred the characters that play in the shades of grey, the morally ambiguous, if you will. Looking at some of my favourite characters across the fandoms, you have people like Magneto, Alex Krycek, Kronos, John Constantine.

That's not to say that I don't love me a good hero, or an outright bad guy, but those that play in the middle hold more appeal.

Ruric asked the questions is he mad, bad and dangerous to know or just a misunderstood woobie? I think the answer is yes and yes.

The only thing we really know about Peter is that the only side Peter Hale is on, is Peter Hale's.

There are indications from the flashbacks that Peter's always been a manipulative little shit, but is that because he was bad from the beginning, or because he was a teenager who saw Derek pulling away from him due to Paige? (And as an aside, yes, I absolutely ship Peter/Derek. I personally think it's hilarious that Peter has been instrumental in the deaths of all three women that the series has shown Derek being romantically involved with. He couldn't have marked Derek more as his if he'd pissed on the guy.)

We don't know exactly what he was like before the fire, and how the fire changed him. Yes, Derek lost everything, but so did Peter.

Here's the thing, when Peter's talking to Derek about Cora, and mentions that wolves never abandon an injured member, he's not lying. Pack behaviour is to protect the injured, to help them heal. Laura abandoned Peter in Beacon Hills. Now, I'm sure she did what she felt she had to do, but that doesn't change the fact that she cut off a member of her own pack and effectively left him helpless and surrounded by people he didn't know. She effectively made him an omega. Because, let's be honest, I doubt if she and Derek popped back every week to see how he was doing. And the show has never dealt with that.

If you look at it that way, then that marks Laura as a pretty shitty Alpha, who abandoned part of her pack. We don't know the frame of mind Peter was in when he killed her. And, no, I'm not justifying it, but to say that the only reason he killed her was to become an alpha ignores the entire surrounding backstory of Peter. Did he even recognise her at that point? Was he too far gone to recognise family? Or, did he even class her as pack by then. She left him in Beacon Hills, so did he owe her any allegiance at that point?

And maybe he did kill her to get the alpha power. Every action Peter took during season 1 was to get revenge on the people who burned the Hale house, the people who killed his pack. He was, in my opinion, pretty much vengeance wrapped in fur. If I'm being honest, I think a lot of people can empathise.

The beauty about Peter Hale is he's such a delicious dichotomy. He's out for himself and, ultimately, I think the only survival Peter is interested in is his own. But then there's looking after Cora in the hospital, and the fact that he never just killed Derek to take his alpha power (because he's had opportunity to).

That's what I like about Peter. That I just don't know. It's what keeps me coming back to him. Well, that and the fact that he's the sassiest son of a bitch out there.

Secondly (because I mentioned my attraction to the character comes from two places), he's really fucking hot. Yes, this is Claire being as shallow as Claire can possibly be, but when Peter's on screen, it's a case of:

But it was always going to be with those eyes. Seriously, that eye/mouth combination is fucking lethal.


And that's before the wolf bleeds through:

And the neck thing! Again! He may as well be wearing a sign that says "Bite here!" (Look, I grew up with vampire stories, it's a thing, okay.)


He even looks good with blood running down his chin. Okay, he looks especially good with blood running down his chin:


And he leans against things in a way that draw your eyes to his legs. And then makes you wonder why said legs aren't wrapped around Chris Argent's waist.


And the fingers:


I mean, come on, those fingers need to be doing something. Preferably sexual. And preferably with Chris Argent.


And then he does that little head tilt that makes part of you want to tell him to get on his knees.


And you know he'd go to them if you wanted him to.


Right until he turned it around and you found yourself on your knees instead.


Because he's Peter fucking Hale.


And what else can you do? Hale to the King, baby.

You know what's hilarious? Until I read it here, I never consciously realized that Peter has been instrumental in the deaths of all three women that the series has shown Derek being romantically involved with. And it kills me that I never noticed, because I am perfectly aware that whatever Peter's damage is, it has something to do with taking Derek down.
