Translation help!

Help!

Is the exhaust on a car still called the exhaust if you're in the US? Or is it just the tailpipe? Or something different?

Since I'm neither American nor a driver, I've totally blanked on this one ::grin::

Exhaust, tailpipe, and muffler are all used pretty interchangeably with varying degrees of correctness.

Cool :D That seems to be the general consensus, so I'm going to go with exhaust :D

The tailpipe is the metal hose part leaving the muffler. Internal combustion "Exhaust" gases comes out of the tailpipe.

IE He died from the exhaust fumes. Too much carbon monoxide and not enough oxygen.

IE The stick of dynamite went into the tailpipe.

IE That car is so loud it needs a new exhaust system. He must have no muffler.

Hope that helps. Most of the time US and Canada are pretty much the same.

Thank you! The general consensus is that if I use exhaust people will understand what I mean, so I'm going with that (Mainly because every time I type 'tailpipe' it makes me giggle. Why, yes, I am five ;)

Exhaust pipe and tailpipe seem to be used interchangeably here in New England.

Exhaust pipe, Tail pipe and muffler seem to be the same thing around here in Ohio. ^.^ *Lives on the Hellmouth so can't be certain what it's called here is right, cause it's the Hellmouth*
