Fannish 50 2026 #04: Sabrina
Jan. 21st, 2026 03:02 pmI'm always amused when a fannish love/connection changes my perspective on something.
I watched Sabrina when I was a kid, so omg 40-50 years ago. I remember it as okay. Humphrey Bogart's character was a work obsessed fuddy-duddy, not his more typical macho heroic cynic, and the age difference between him and Audrey Hepburn seemed excessive. (30 years, yikes.)
I rewatched it this week and couldn't help but think: wow, this could work as a Qui/Obi AU.
Sabrina (Hepburn) is the daughter of a rich family's chauffeur. She has grown up adoring the younger brother (William Holden), who pays her no attention. Her father sends her to France for a two year cooking course, and she returns elegant and sophisticated. The younger brother is a playboy who takes notice, except the older brother (Bogart), is determined that his sibling should marry an heiress to grease a merger between the two families' companies. Recognizing the danger Sabrina poses, he steps in to woo her himself, and falls in love. Of course, she does too, and they sail off on a cruise, as the younger brother steps up and takes responsibility.
I don't know which character to plug in as the younger brother would be the main hang-up, I can't think of anyone appropriate as an irresponsible playboy who gets his act together. Obi-Wan (Benjamin) obviously as Sabrina, perhaps with a mother as the cook instead of the chauffeur-father to add a female character into the mix. Qui-Gon (Quinn) as the business-obsessed, driven brother, determined to always be the best and keep the company expanding. Maybe more actual angst about the age difference? And Quinn falling faster in love but also trying to resist Ben's infectious smile? IDK, I didn't get really very far in how it would actually go, it just amuses me that I always appreciate things more when I can view through a fannish lens!

[food] parsnip risotto, redux
Jan. 21st, 2026 11:11 pmBack in November I made a ridiculously overengineered parsnip risotto, as a way of dipping a toe into my next cookbook project. I said at the time that it was very tasty, and also I was unlikely to ever make it again.

I did this already on the day of Challenge #5, so I'm considering this one done. Yeah, it's cheating a little, but it's been a day, lol.

1/21/2026 Damon Slough & Garretson Point
Jan. 21st, 2026 02:10 pmU and I went down to MLK Regional Shoreline to see if we could find the Green-tailed Towhee, which she saw briefly the first time and I did see at all. We couldn't, but we birded an area we'd only seen from afar, getting a much closer view of the shorebirds that roost there: lots of American Avocets and Black-necked Stilts, lots of Willets and Marbled Godwits. We were also delighted to discover that the seasonal wetland at Garretson Point still has water and ducks two weeks plus since the last rain. I wish the Berkeley Meadow ponds were that well fed! ( A combined list: )
The Garretson Point parking lot was blocked so we parked in a little lot off Zhone Way with direct access to the Damon Slough area as well as a back route to Garretson Point. Could come in handy.

yarning
Went to yarn group Sunday despite an earlier migraine and had a pretty good time. Worked on a donation hat. I've been all hats all the time, working down my yarn stash, as I haven't had any kickbunny sales. I did sell 3 catnip-silvervine stuffed hearts. It's supposed to get down into the teens this weekend, with possible snow. I hope things will be clear for yarn group.
healthcrap
Friday: allergy shot. Tuesday: medical transportation assessment, which went fairly well. I'll hear whether I qualify in 2-3 weeks. Today: pharmacy & first shingles shot. I need to get labs done, but I should wait until the shingles side effects pass.

Check-In Post - Jan 21st 2026
Jan. 21st, 2026 08:20 pmHello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.
Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?
There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.
This Week's Question: What are your crafting goals for 2026?
If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.
I now declare this Check-In OPEN!
What I’m doing Wednesday
Jan. 21st, 2026 02:05 pmTeacher stuff
Week 2 is underway and week 3 reading material is ready. I’ve written out the structure for week 4 reading material. It’s going well.
I’ll be writing for the next two days. I’m taking the afternoon off.
Reading
I’ve put on hold v.8 of Heaven Official’s blessing because I do not want to finish it and have no more to read in that universe. The gods of books must have heard about this because….the manhua in hardback cover is now available to order (since early December). So when v.1 of the manhua gets here this week-end I can finish the book series.
I’m rapidly going through The Apothecary Diaries (light novel) v.1 (in French) this is the novel series that inspired the manga and the anime. I like it. It’s a fusion of a Japanese et Chinese universe. Mao Mao is bright and somewhat fearless.
I also have Christian Bobin’s Un bruit de balançoire which is poetry in prose and a good remedy to insomnia. It’s not available in English.
Shen Tao’s The Poet Empress also arrived this week. It is so pretty.
Watching
I’m on the last part of Love Between Lines (episode 20) all the episodes (28) are available now. It’s a HE and my first sweet and adorable cdrama of 2026. On par with The Best Thing from last year at about the same time.
Crafting
I have a baby blanket to knit for the end of March. So I started a Forever Baby Blanket from Purl Soho with Caron’s Macchiato Cakes yarn in all shades of lavender. It’s an easy pattern once it’s started and you can watch and knit.
Since last spring I’ve joined a crafting group where I can stitch, knit, draw, etc. It’s every other Friday night. We talk, laugh, drink lots of mocktails, eat some incredible Italian snacks and diner, all the while using our brain to create beautiful things. I love it.

Half A Moon 2026
Jan. 21st, 2026 02:34 pmLast year I participated in
halfamoon for the first time. I enjoyed it and have been looking forward to this round. The prompts for this coming round (beginning Feb 1) have been posted HERE.
Per the mod, this year is all about archetypes. So I've listed the seven feminine archetypes on the odd number days and then something that plays against that on the even number days.
I’m including the prompts here because I need to think about them some. Yes, I’m thinking they’ll all be Jessica again, but that’s not set in stone.

Wednesday Reading Meme
Jan. 21st, 2026 02:11 pmWhat I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: Nothing! I’ve watched a lot of tv and did a lot of writing in the last week, which didn’t leave much time for reading.
What I am Currently Reading: Still working on Husband Material (London Calling) by Alexis Hall.
What I Plan to Read Next: Probably the other library book I have out as I've only got one renewal on it.

a fool for another day
Jan. 21st, 2026 02:07 pmI did indeed get in bed by 9:30 last night and slept pretty hard. I probably could have slept even more, but 11 hours is a pretty good night!
For some reason, I woke up with Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik in my head, and when I wondered to
angelgazing whatever happened to him, she said he co-wrote Spring Awakening, which I did not know, so good for him! From one-hit wonder to Tony winner!
On the Mets front, they finally got a centerfielder in Luis Robert Jr. I guess if he can stay healthy, he'll be an upgrade over last year, offensively at least, though I am still a Tyrone Taylor fan for his A+ defense. #better call tyrone
In other sports news, my attempt to get interested in basketball seems to have done serious damage to the Knicks. They have been losing a lot lately. Plus, everyone I mentioned it to was like, don't do that. I didn't realize people in my wider circle felt that way about basketball. I guess there's always the Liberty! I should figure out when that season starts. Or the Sirens for hockey, but I don't think they've been very good either. Just a bad time all round for NY sports, I guess. And it's not like I'm a fair weather fan, though this certainly sounds like it - it's just I'd like to root for a team that isn't completely terrible, you know? As a treat!
On the books front, there is finally cover art and a real blurb for Dungeon Crawler Carl 8: Parade of Horribles, but still no Kindle* or e-book edition, so I broke down and pre-ordered the hardcover. (I can't do audiobooks. I've tried.) I also decided to do a reread of the series, because I've been trying to map out all the various stuff that needs resolving - and it is A LOT - so I wanted it to be fresh in my mind. So at some point there will be a post that is basically me as that Charlie Day-at-the-murder-board meme trying to figure it all out. *hands*
*I realize that I probably need to do a "free trial" of Kindle Unlimited to get the Kindle edition but I do not want to do that at this time. As the release date gets closer, we'll see if a Kindle edition shows up and I end up cancelling the hardcover, as I would prefer not to buy a hardcover tbh. I have all the rest on kindle, which is where I do 99.5% of my book-reading these days.
So anyway, I guess for the Wednesday reading meme, I just finished a reread of book 1 of Dungeon Crawler Carl and started rereading book 2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario. And I will probably read book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook after that and so on and so forth. *wry*
