Title: Moments In Time: Thunder
Episode: Blind Date
Author: Claire
Wesley can't believe they're listening to this, listening to *him*. Never mind that the people he works for have tried to have them killed. Never mind that they were the ones who hired Faith. All Lindsey McDonald has to do is walk into the office and tell Angel he wants help and Angel drops everything.
Lindsey, with his rumpled $3,000 suit. Lindsey, with his gravel smooth voice that cuts right through you. Lindsey, with his sharp blue eyes that miss nothing. Lindsey, with his sharp blue eyes that follow Angel wherever he goes. And suddenly all Wesley can feel for Lindsey is empathy. Empathy that they both want what they can never have. Empathy for a man that's doing exactly the same thing he did. Lindsey is turning his back on Wolfram & Hart, betraying them for Angel.
//Loyalty to a vampire now, is it?//
Looking up, he catches Lindsey's gaze, seeing himself reflected deep in the blue.
And Lindsey pauses, stops as he realises what Wesley sees, stops as he realises what *he* sees. Misses a beat before he breaks the look and drops his eyes back to the map laid out on the desk. "Vault's at sub-lever two. Hall's outside the boiler room."
"Sewer access?" Because Angel can't go in through the front door. Not unless he wants to go in an ashtray.
"You'd have to burn your way in."
"Why are you going in at all? I thought born-again boy was gonna do it." But that's the point Cordelia, Angel would never let Lindsey go in alone.
"It's a two men job."
Is it? Or are you just unwilling to let Lindsey out of your sight? Unwilling to lose him now he's come to you? Because if Wesley can see how Lindsey looks at Angel, then he can certainly see how Angel looks at Lindsey. And it makes him want to scream. Scream because he's there, and unlike Lindsey he's never tried to have them all killed. Or is that the appeal? The danger, the darkness. Is Wesley too... *good* for him?
"How do I access the vault?"
"My pass. I'll need it to get in. They're getting pretty tight with security. But I can leave it downstairs for you. Gets you right into the vault."
"Again I say..."
But Lindsey cuts her off. "It's guarded. Demon. Doesn't go in for unauthorised visits. There is no way I can take it." Even though Wesley thinks maybe Lindsey should try. But he wants the image of blood to leave him, and maybe it's better if Lindsey survives. After all, it's easier to fight the shadow of a living enemy than the spectre of a dead martyr.
"What kind of demon?"
"Pregothian. I think."
"I'll get you a battle profile; weaknesses and such." And they're the first words Wesley has said, because he wants to prove that he's useful. That Angel still needs him. Needs him more than he'll ever need Lindsey McDonald.
"Right."
"I'll do what I can with the security monitors, but you'll have to move fast because the moment - oh, damn it."
"What?" And Wesley wonders what Lindsey can sound so concerned about.
"The threshold. They have shamans. They can sense the moment a vampire crosses the threshold."
Of course they can, because this was never going to be easy, was it.
"That's not going to be a problem."
"Well, then. Seems pretty simple, except for the 'you'll definitely get caught' factor." But doesn't Cordelia realise that Angel has a plan? Angel *always* has a plan.
Silence reigns over the table for a brief moment as Lindsey lifts his eyes, gaze flicking across Wesley. And for Wesley it's like looking into himself. Lindsey, all want and need and pain and bravado. Lindsey, who's making the same choice as Wesley between his life and his heart. Lindsey, who can hear the thunder calling.
"And the righteous shall walk a thorny path."
Lindsey's words strike deep and Wesley closes his eyes briefly. A thorny path, indeed. Wesley can only pray neither of them fall off.
