Yes, there are happy ending fics, and redemption fics, and you-killed-my-father-but-we'll-work-through-it-because-I-am-addicted-to-your-dick fics, but to totally ignore the other side of it (you know, that would be the *canonical* side of it) is... well, it's just bloody insulting to the characters. Ignore that side of it and you're not writing Fox Mulder and Alex Krycek, you're writing Tinky Winky and La-La.
