It was a friend's birthday at work today yesterday, and someone bought her the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

I came this close to just blurting out "Oh god, the bad Twilight fanfic porn makes the baby Jesus cry..." before I remembered I was in work and just smiled and backed away.

Had to make a comment on this - we just got this series at the academic library I work at. There was a mini-argument in Administration on whether or not to order it because of the content. I fortunately wasn't the one who had to add it to the catalog, but the person who did said that she tried to read a few pages to see what all the hubbub was about and had to stop because of the bad writing. The person who requested the series said our local public library had a wait list of over 300 for the 1st book. Sigh.

Does the person who bought this 'gift' hate the recipient or something?

Almost all of the women at my work are reading it (or have read it). All I can hear when I go into the Staff Room recently is "Omg, have you read this bit" and other such blather, and it's just.... *flails* IT'S JUST PORN PEOPLE, AND NOT EVEN THAT WELL WRITTEN PORN.

A few of us went to lunch yesterday. One of my co-workers commented that his partner has read all three and he is enjoying the results. He then said she hadn't heard of a butt plug so it appears to me that the non-fandomed may be using them as a sex manual. Another colleague said it was probably a shame there wasn't more than three of them at which point "It's not like there isn't plenty on the internet" popped out of my mouth leading to 3 pairs of eyes swivelling in my direction.

*loses all faith in humanity.... again*

Maybe you should direct these people to AO3 or something?

I... did blurt that out when one of the Clinical Leads brought it up with me the other day. I was like "dude, I can give you 50 links and they're all 100 times better than that trash". She was only saying one of her nursing colleagues mentioned the series to her on a course the previous day, she didn't even have it/want to read it! I'm just weirdly offended by it's presence lol

On the one hand, it is kind of refreshing to plop myself down at the waterpark and, for once, not be the only one reading porn while their kids play (Although, to be fair, I don't know what those other people have on their e-readers, either). Seriously, the only days when I'm not sitting next to someone reading a FSoG book are the days when I'm sitting alone or next to a guy.

On the other hand, it's depressing to know that something so rife with sexual misogyny has gotten so far into the mainstream. Even if the writing sucked, couldn't it at least have been less problematic? Or hotter?

I object to the series not only because of the bad writing and skeevy misogyny masquerading as BDSM, but because, if someone was going to publish fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, there are so many better stories out there that deserve to be published.

300? Sigh, indeed.

lol! Maybe A's been harbouring a secret grudge and has been waiting for H's b.day to come along to get her own back.

There are so many fics out there that deserved to be published. This isn't one of them ::grumps::

I'm torn between lol'ing and wincing at the thought of using that book as a sex manual. Some of the excerpts I've read... no, just no.

But then I'd have to explain fandom and fanfiction and I only have so many hours in the day ;)

People should be offended by its presence. That's the correct response ::grin::

Exactly. It's just so bad in so many ways. ::sigh::

*G* like, I'm glad women are getting to read and enjoy porn, but I really wish it was GOOD lol

::grin:: Exactly. It's not the porn I object to, it's the way it's atrociously written and full of skeeve.

It gives all the good porn a bad name! I'm hoping this means people who can write decent stuff will get published and it'll be come the norm rather than something exciting, to be reading it.

When I was shopping in Sainsburys yesterday someone (a woman) was trying to buy all three of the books, all of which were out of stock. I told her that if she wanted to read this type of story there's much better written stuff online for free.

Hopefully I saved at least one person from forking out good money for badly writtn fanfic.

I'm sure I saw a review on Amazon when i was trying to work out why everyone was so excited about it that said it was abusive (in a relationship sense, not to everyone's intelligence... although if you've read some excerpts, maybe both). Hopefully they'll pass over those bits. Oh good grief! I really did not need to wonder if my co-worker has a whip lying around the house. I am amused that there is now one that is titled 'Barbara Cartland meets Twilight'.

::grin:: Or, indeed, the actual story online for free.

Hopefully she listened to you :D
