So, I just went and surfed sga_hate, and I realise I should be saying that people should have the belief in their opinions to sign their names to them... but I also gotta admit I was nodding along with several points made *grin*

I found any good points were drowned out by the egregerious hatred. Okay, some fanfiction characterisation points may be interesting discussion-wise, but it should be possible to have a civilised discussion about what works, or doesn't work, for some people. I know I can get passionate about some stories and have ranted on (ad nauseum *g*) why some do or don't work for me, but at least I've been open in my comments.

But this is (mostly) just...bile.

I must admit I don't *get* why some people are so resentful of others, either. Why are they so threatened by some BNFs? Any of them I've ever had dealings with I've found to be perfectly fine, and gracious in accepting both praise and criticism, including some who people accuse of not responding to feedback.

So, yeah, I get the fascination of watching from a trainwreck syndrome POV, but I don't get the real *hatred*.

I think the problem is, once you're hiding behind a veil of anonymity then there's really nothing to stop you from beng as vitriolic as you want to be - there's no come back associated with you.

Attach a username to an opinion and it forces a veneer of civilisation as no one not a lot of people want to be thought of as 'that bitch who...'

However, I still agree with some of the points made - although I may have made them with slightly more tact ;)

Yeah, teh locked post thing just bugs me sometimes -- because I do it, and then I think well, that's not all that far off from commenting anonymously -- I don't have the courage of my convictions sufficient to go public, I only say things to a closed chamber of friends where I'm reasonably sure that they either agree or won't disagree except in ways I know I can cope with. Which sounds weak and woolly minded, and then I think, well, if I didn't lock it, I'd upset someone I don't mean to and and up on F-W, and it's all lock, lock, lockity lock from there on in *g*

*g* And it's stopping the wank. You and I both know that our lot are capable of disagreeing vehemently with each other and still having rational, well thought out discussions. Throw wank into the mix and it degenerates into name calling and hair-pulling. So, lock and eliminate the wank :)

Which is a shame, because you don't know if you're excluding someone who would also be able to argue in an intelligent and non-wanky way, and maybe reduce that whole echo chamber thing that makes me so twitchy sometimes. I *like* new ideas and opinions. I'm just -- it's a big wide internet and 90% of the people on it are boring or bat shit crazy.

Screening all comments would work I suppose as a crude form of moderation, but it's not ideal either. Keeping a low profile works too, but then, you don't get the new people coming through either if you're a self-cultivated backwater. Eh. I don't know.
