So, y'all remember how here I said that I was getting a giant African land snail?

Well, I now has said giant African land snail!

Although, if we're being honest, at the moment he's more of totally diddy African land snail...

I got him last Monday, and he's spent the past week buried under the peat in his tank. I only knew he was alive because he kept being buried under different parts of it with only the tip of his shell showing through. But today! Today he was nomming cucumber - which meant I did what I normally do whenever the cat stays still for more than thirty seconds, and got the camera out ::grin::

Fear the iddy biddy diddyness...

He will, however, get bigger.

Snail! Awwwwww, he's cute! In a, you know, snail way!

He is! Cute and diddy! And when he gets older, he'll be cute and not so diddy ::grin::

I also spent the day watching Criminal Minds and I may, at one point, have pointed to the TV and gone, "Look! That's who you're named after..."

It's a sign of how far you've fallen when that neither surprises nor seems out of place. I once had a conversation with Sam & Rachel's cat about the obvious slashiness of Lincoln and Michael in Prison Break. ... I say "had a conversation"... *coughs* *G*

... *eyes you in resigned fashion*

Yeah. That's all I got.

I don't even have any kind of defence. Like "I was high!" or "I was sleep deprived!" I am forced to resort to "you've met me, right?"

*g* well, *yes*. I mean, anyone else, I could at least fake a whole 'what, you! No! Say it isn't so!', but really, we've taken that pony around the park that many times he's more than ready for the Sunshine Home for Retired Park Ponies.

I say anyone else, but actually, that's not even true. There's like, the twelve people Claire bought tickets for, and really, I'd expect as much from any of you. It may even be this is *why* I like y'all so much. I think I may be sick or something...

He is! He's cute and teeny and snaily ::grin::

SNAIL!! *pets gently* Are you going to get a few more to keep him company or will he be keeping the cucumber solely for himself? And yes, he will get bigger, I hope he appreciates how nice it is to still be of a scale where vegetables are positive cities... :)

I'm probably just going to stick with the one to see how it goes.

It's totally a skyscraper-sized cucumber at the moment ::grin::

Aww! That's so cute. How quickly will he grow?

Date: 2008-09-24 02:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
He should grow steadily until he reaches his full size (his shell can grow to be the size of an adult's fist). Which is a way of saying I'm not sure ::grin:: In two or three months he should be at least twice the size he is now.

AWWWWWW! Tis SO tiny! So cute :) Are they very fragile, or robust? How big can they get?

...or is that a GIANT cucumber?

Date: 2008-09-24 02:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
They're pretty robust, but he's still a baby, so his shell's not as thick as it will be.

The shells can grow to about the size of an adult's fist, so quite big ::grin::

And, nope, just a normal sized cucumber ;)

Teeny tiny giant snail!

He's very cute. One of the clergy at work used to have an African land snail. I say used, he probably still does but he moved away so now we're back to the terribly average cats and dogs.

He is so very teeny. And he was much, much smaller than that when he hatched :D

Oh, he's really teeny tiny at the moment! How can you tell the sex of something so small?

Date: 2008-09-24 02:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
::grin:: They're actually hermaphroditic, but I got in the habit of calling him 'he' :)

Totally teeny tiny ::grin::

Awww, cute. How big is he going to get?

Date: 2008-09-24 02:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
::grin:: Their shells can grow to about the size of an adult's fist, so he's going to get just a little bigger ;)

OMG! He is so wee! Unbelievably small when you think how big he's going to get.

He's adorable!

First of all it was "yuk, big snail" and then when I looked at the piccy it was "awwwh, it's cute - for a snail" but now I'm thinking "how big will it actually get and if it decides to escape and stick to the window will you be able to pull it off???? or what if it watches too much Alien and decides to be a face hugger..."

...If you see what I mean *scratches head*

Date: 2008-09-24 02:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
::grin:: He's going to grow so his shell will be about the size of an adult fist, so just a teeny bit bigger ;)

And less of a face-hugger and more of a face-slimer, I think ::grin::

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE's at the iddy biddy diddyness :D

I have always wanted giant African land snails. I will have to get some for Jamie. He can stick googly eyes and stars and stuff on the shell. (What, it's not mean, it's not like it can see its own shell...) Apparently, they enjoy beer, did you know this?

But dude, I hope you haven't been scammed ::eyes iddy biddy not at all giant snail dubiously::

Although he's cute either way. And one of the first foods Bean tried was cucumber, I have some incredibly cute pictures of him nomming, too!

When he's bigger, will you bring him to the [next] con? :D
