So, if Michael isn't going to leave Dean a drooling mass of goo, then doesn't it make sense for Dean to say yes now? That way, they can kill Lucifer while he's still in Nick, thereby negating the entire "Sam says yes" scenario.

Well, yes, that would make perfect sense, which is why it won't happen.

Dean's whole justification for saying no to Michael is a bit iffy, imo.

Especially if Michael's telling the truth about him leaving Dean okay afterwards. (And since he left John okay, there's no reason to think he's lying.)

Even without that, when has Dean ever turned down the opportunity to sacrifice himself to save Sam (and everyone else, but mostly Sam)? Knowing he'll survive just fine? - yeah, I can't really see any compelling reason for him to say no either, except that it'll bring the season to a premature end.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking "Hold on..."

While that makes good human logic, I don't think the angels are prepared to be that flexible--they want Dean and Sam, damn it, and that's what they're going to have. There's also been the implication that, the end of the world isn't just going to be between Michael and Lucifer; there's a lot of collateral damage, and humanity might be even more screwed over than it already is.

And while I wish Dean would just say yes, because hey, he's got an out now, finally, I can also understand him saying no. He's been yanked around his entire life, tortured in Hell pretty much because the angels/prophecy said he had to be... I think at that point I'd be feeling rather uncooperative myself :D

And Dean's always been a contrary bugger, so I suppose he'd say no just because he's been told to say yes ::grin::

But what reason does Dean have to believe Michael? He doesn't witness John after Michael has vacated his body. Zachariah has been Michael's most ardent advocate to date and he's not exactly trustworthy (unless you trust him to be a dick).

And more generally, after all the angels except Castiel have proved to be huge dicks, and the Winchesters have been screwed around by demons, I can understand Dean wanting to take control of his own life, even if he suspects it's an illusory control.

*studiously not mentioning the otherwise premature ending of the season which is of course the real reason*

But if they really did travel back in time, then Dean has seen John after Michael, because he knows his Dad isn't a drooling mass of goo ::grin::

Although I can understand him not wanting to do it just because someone tells him. It's just that part of me thinks that Dean would do this if he thought it would save Sam.

*g* Oh dear, you're getting into all this timey wimey business - too much for my brain!

It's a very good point about doing it now he has more information because at this stage it would save Sam. I think he's perhaps still reacting to the attempts at coercion and hasn't thought it through in the light of new information.

I've heard a few people saying exactly the same thing. It definitely feels like there's something we're missing.

::grin:: In a nutshell? Sam believes that killing Lillith will stop her from breaking the final Seal. Castiel reveals to Dean (with much homoerotic undertones) that killing Lillith is the final Seal and they have to stop Sam. They bounce to Chuck's, who tells them where Sam is and Cas zaps Dean off to stop Sam while he faces down the archangel trying to stop them.

Dean gets there too late and Sam kills Lillith. Ruby reveals she's really evil and that she's been edging Sam towards this all along. Dean gets there and kills Ruby. It ends with Lillith's blood leaking across the floor into a circle and a column of white light blasting through the floor.

And...

To be continued...

Dum dum dum...
